the "foreigner"

 The foreigner is contemporaneously an outsider in that he or she arrives without warning, does not share the same history or customs, and lives the vortex of a disrupted continuum. The sense of 'separateness' that the foreigner feels is an intellectually based awareness as a result of his or her a-historical ‘condition’. A foreigner can attempt to suppress his or her outsider status and live it surreptitiously: by adorning the self and the language with the precepts of the encountered culture; by living with the duality of being an outsider in the public sphere and an ‘ordinary’ person in the private sphere; or by taking his or her foreignness into the public sphere and there slowly transform it into a cultural experience (as a writer, filmmaker, artist).
