Resistance and Rhetoric in Jack Davis' No Sugar

I wrote the essay Resistance and Rhetoric in Jack Davis' No Sugar while doing Honours. The essay was awarded the Austin and Valerie Asche Essay Prize in Australian Contemporary Society and Culture in 1996.

"Here Jimmy  makes  clear  the  black  (appropriated /put on ) face of  the  white colonizers. Jimmy's  insight (though he does not qualify it) is to show that  blackness is an invention of the white imagination and has nothing to do with the skin colour nor the existence of the Aboriginal. The colonizer's subjective 'object'  is his own 'blackness'. Jimmy also makes clear that the imposition of a white 'notion' on  a  another human  race  is 'criminal'."
